Mario Farnbacher is set to add another highlight to his US race programme. On 1 and 2 June, the young German will be racing for the Meyer Shank Racing Team in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in Detroit alongside his teammate in the Acura NSX GT3, Katherine Legge.
The #86 Acura is second in the championship in the fiercely competitive GTD class after three races of the season. The team’s aim is to cut the gap to first position, with Farnbacher’s assistance.
“I’m delighted to get the chance to race in Detroit”, said Farnbacher in the run-up to the race weekend. “Belle Isle Park is one of my favourite tracks and I have many great memories here. I want to perform well here and collect as many points for the team as possible. The team has a real chance to win the championship title, and I’d like to help them as much as I can. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the Acura.”
There is certainly a reason why the Raceway at Belle Isle Park is one of the 26-year-old’s favourite circuits. In 2014, the Bavarian finished on the podium in Detroit, before winning the race one year later in the TUDOR United Sportscar Championship.
The start in Detroit marks Farnbacher’s third race in the US with the crew headed up by Michael Shank, after joining the Ohio-based team for the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Daytona.
The race begins on Saturday at 6:30 pm German time. You can follow all the action on the series’ website.
