Mario Farnbacher takes championship lead

The latest round of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship was packed full of excitement and intrigue. Once again Virginia International Raceway delivered wheel-to-wheel racing and race-long battles for the podium, with Mario Farnbacher in the midst of the action. Thanks to an outstanding overtaking manoeuvre in the closing stages, the 28-year-old finished second and assumed the championship lead.

“We are super happy with the result, because it has given us a major boost in the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships,” said Farnbacher after his third podium in succession. “The race itself wasn’t easy and some of the battles were really tight – this time I would like to say a huge thank you to my teammate Matt, who did a fantastic job.”

Among the highlights of the race in the US state of Virginia was undoubtedly the three-way battle between Bryan Sellers, Lawson Aschenbach and Mario Farnbacher. Farnbacher’s overtakes once again earned him the nickname “Super Mario” from the commentators.

The German-American duo now lead the drivers’ championship with 115 points. Only two points separate them from second-placed Jack Hawksworth for Lexus.

The next stop on the calendar is Road Atlanta, which will host the first of two races in 2020. The 6 Hours of Atlanta is scheduled for 4 to 6 September.
